Totally Free (Laurel Shadrach Series, 2)
Published in Paperback by Moody Publishers (July, 2002)
Average review score:

totally free book review"Totally Free" is the second installment in the Laurel Shadrach series. The book covers the bulk of the remainder of her senior year of high school. Laurel is now dating Foster, a Christian guy. But Branson, her ex, will not leave her alone, especially since he regrets leaving her only to find out that he might have AIDS because his girlfriend has it. Laurel has a hard time trying to keep away from Branson and Foster catches the two of them in some rather compromising situations. Then there is Laurel's best friend Brittany, who is now a Christian and of whom is struggling with her faith. Plus Laurel's brothers seem to be at war, especially when one discovers alcohol and becomes an alcoholic--and then takes up gamblimg on the side. Laurel and her world have been torn apart again--especially after a tragic accident unfolds that leaves Laurel wondering if she still likes Branson. This book is a slightly weaker installment than the first one, but is still a worthy read. I also recommend this author's "Payton Skky" series.

Travel Smart: Florida Gulf Coast
Published in Paperback by John Muir Pubns (February, 2000)
Average review score:

Florida Gulf Coast: A Different Kind of GuidebookI searched far and wide for a travel guidebook that deals specifically with the Gulf Coast of Florida, and I found exactly what I was looking for in "Florida Gulf Coast: Travel Smart" by Carol J. Perry (John Muir Publications, 2000). Now that I've returned from ten interesting days of putting this book to use, I want to share my experience of applying it to my travels. While covering a geographic area from Pensacola to Naples, "Florida Gulf Coast: Travel Smart" starts off with a great introduction to the Gulf Coast including nature and history. Then it offers good background information about each destination and suggests sightseeing highlights. The sights are prioritized in order, which helps separate the "must sees" from the "if you have time" attractions. Perry suggests activities that make a "perfect day" at a given location, then gives information on food and lodging choices. Overall, this book was helpful because it told enough about a destination(I particularly enjoyed the write-ups on Apalachicola and Cedar Key) to give a general feel for it so the reader could decide if a certain place was their style or not.If so, proceed to visit and use the food and lodging selections. If not, then one can spend time elsewhere. Perry also includes Special Interest Tour sample itineraries (ex. Family Fun Tour, Nature Lovers Tour) at the back of the book. The only draw back to "Florida Gulf Coast: Travel Smart" is that pricing information is very general, at best, though ranges are presented that cover B&Bs to camping. Phone numbers are included so it is possible to call ahead for lodging. Overall, I strongly recommend this book and believe that it truly is "a different kind of guidebook". It does take the guesswork out of your travels and does an excellent job of pin pointing the most interesting attractions.

Trees and shrubs for dry California landscapes : plants for water conservation : an introduction to more than 360 California native and introduced plants which survive with limited water
Published in Unknown Binding by Land Design Pub. ()
Average review score:

Nice pictorial referenceThis book's strength is its pictures - realistic representations of dry California landscape plants. I would use it as a "brainstorm" book for getting ideas on which species to use in a particular landscape. The notations for each species are also helpful. Definitely one for the library.

Turbo C++ Programming in 12 Easy Lessons
Published in Paperback by SAMS (24 August, 1994)
Average review score:

Great book for beginners -ONLYGreat book for beginners. This book is a great place to start in learning C++. It covers all the basics like it says in the synopsis above. My Intro to C++ class used this book. This book is NOT the place to learn Object Oriented Programming, however. The last chapter mentions OOP and shows an example class structure, but not much else on the subject (there is a reference to buying another book by the author to learn more). The book is written in language that is easy to understand, and the examples reinforce the lessons well, for the most part. As a book for beginners I rate it four stars. When you are ready for more info, I recommend Herbert Schildt's C++ from the Ground Up. It makes a good follow up to this book.

New to Delphi? Start Here!!!If your looking for a good informative read without the arcane language of the manuels. This book reviews the interface and components with accurate examples and provides a checklist for delivering database applications. They also include references for those who would persue the technical aspects of the underlying ObjectPascal language.

Visual Basic for Cobol Programmers/Book and Disk
Published in Paperback by Que (April, 1995)
Average review score:

Useful when leaning VB(5/6)This book was helpful when I took a semester-long course on Visual Basic. I used it while doing the homework assignments. Used it mostly for specific examples and to clarify details in the primary course workbook (particularly when my 25+ years of COBOL thinking kept me from comprehending the VB way to do things). The index and table of contents were adequate for searching for examples and explanations.

Walter Johnson: A Life
Published in Hardcover by Diamond Communications (March, 1995)
Average review score:

A Sportspage Documentary!Mr. Kavanaugh does a fantastic job in memorializing the Big Train. While many biographies will tend to go into the intricacies of a man's private life, Jack Kavanaugh seems to only look into these areas when it would explain the on field actions of Johnson. "A Life" reads like a beautifully written column in the sportspage - the cold hard facts of the game with the eventful games highlighted. Futhermore, "A Life" does something else - it reminds that not all ballplayers were or are spoiled children with no sense of values or morals. I reccommend to all who hold a dear love of baseball and pitching.

Water Quality: Management of a Natural Resource
Published in Paperback by Blackwell Science Inc (October, 1996)
Average review score:

aquatic issuesI read this book while in the process of taking a class called "Issuses in Aquatic Issues". I felt that the book is a detailed overview of problems that are with todays water quality. It was a book that delt with issues such as water quality management, land effects, pollution effects, ag./farm land usage, groundwater, hydrologic cycles and wetlands. (to mention just a few) The book was written to an easy readers level, but the chapters dragged with examples to prove points. I used this book as a textbook, yet this book would be ok to the average reader who is intersted in this field. Like i said, it is an overview of major issues in aqutic ecology. This book contains many many examples from reasearchs done in this field of study. Which i feel was the strong point of the book. The biggest weakness is that most of the issues encompass the same problems and yet it seems redunant at times. All in all i rated this book as a 4 because i enjoyed the book, it was easy to read and easy to understand without much experience in this field. But i found myself losing concentration at times, and being loss in the many examples. So it loss a point for that in my book
